A Multidimensional Analysis of Language Use in English Argumentative Essays: An Evidence From Comparable Corpora

Multidimensional (MD) analysis contributes to a comprehensive linguistic description of second language (L2) writing texts. However, cross-linguistic studies based on MD are still insufficient and need be increased. In particular, the unavailability comparable corpora prevents current MD-based L2 research from making reliable comparisons differences between native writers learners. Considering these, this study adopts maximum similarity for comparative analysis. Using Biber’s analysis, compares English Chinese learners in argumentative essays with similar communicative purposes. The reveals that two groups texts show significant slightly over half individual features but share more similarities than textual dimensions. It also shows are, fact, different varieties use, even though they text type “involved persuasion.” results confirm importance necessity understanding writing.
